  1. Hi class,as future teachers digital etiquette, digital citizenship, and digital commnunication are going to be very important for you and your students. What examples/ideas have you gained from your readings to support the questions for the week?

  2. As a future teacher, digital etiquette is really important because you want to help your students learn how to be respectful and appropriate especially on the internet. Like in the article "nice elements," you want your future students to become responsible digital citizens. I think that if you incorporate and model how to be responsible and respectful through the use of blogs and wikis, in your classroom, your students will be able to see what is appropriate and what is not.

  3. I totally agree with Amanda. As a teacher students will look up to you to see what is right and what is wrong. If a teacher is not using "digital etiquette", then their students will not use digital etiquette either. It is important to demonstrate to your students the appropriate way to communicate over the internet, esp if you have them use a blog or wikipage! Nice job Amanda!

  5. Q.3: Digital communication can help connect us, future teachers, with our students becuase we will be talking their language. If we talk about facebook, IMing or texting our students will understand what we are saying and we have a better chance at staying connected to our students outside of class. As the article stated, " In the 19th century, forms of communication were limited." Being able to stay up with the new types of communication will allow us to keep up with our students.

  6. Q1 & Q2 I feel digital etiquette is the most important for digital citizenship. When I think about what it means to me to be a citizen of something I think of belonging. To promote belonging in a class etiquette and respect of others is needed. If I as a teacher do not model what proper digital etiquette is how will my students know what to do? As a teacher I will have to guide my students in a class website just as I would guide them in a class discussion. I also think that sometimes children feel bolder using technology then they would in a face to face conversation. Digital etiquette should be discussed in class just as class rules are, and the consequences of inappropriate actions set up before an incident occurs.

  7. Lisa- I liked your video link- I think that is very true and students don't consider what may happen after they post something.

  8. Q2. Digital Etiquette is a very important thing in todays technologically advanced world. It’s just as important to treat people with courtesy and respect online as it is in real life. Although we are communicating digitally it is important to still address people with courtesy, respect and as professional as possible. I feel digital etiquette is particularly important for teachers. My reasoning behind this is as the world becomes more technologically advanced we will continue to use the internet more and more as a means of communication; through e-mails, letters, etc. With the hectic schedules of a teacher it is sometimes easier to communicate with faculty, parents, etc via e-mail. Parents can be very critical of teachers, therefore it is very important for future teachers to learn digital etiquette. We wouldn’t want parents to judge us on our competency to teach their children because of the way we have communicated with them through email. This is why its so important to remain professional even through e-mails. Teachers also communicate a lot with colleagues, administrators, supervisors, etc in e-mails and blogs. It is important to re-read whatever you are writing and make sure you have written without spelling errors, proper capitalization, and more. I feel having good digital etiquette can leave more of an impression on people than you would think. Lisa I really liked the video that you posted, I can see a lot of middle school and high school students relating to this. The internet is a big part of their life. It is important to be careful what we post online because we will be held accountable for our actions, pictures we post, and things we write.

  9. Alexandra Slane, Margie and Allison, Good Job! Alexandra gave a great example of why digital etiquette is so important! As future teachers we will certaintly be writing lots of e-mails, and it is important that we know how to respond in a way that we won't be judged. Allison and Margie, you have great points! Children will certaintly be able to relate better to us if we understand the technology they are using and, may feel more comfortable talking through technology. Keep up the great work!

Class: Margie, Allison, and Alexandra have made some great points, why else is digital etiquette so important, and what are some ways we can introduce it to the class?

  10. I agree with all the posts about digital etiquette. I feel that as our society is becoming more and more apt to communicate via technology our person to person communication skills are weakening. This is why I think digital etiquette is so important for teachers and students to know. I think digital communication is a wonderful source to connect parents with the classroom and help students interact with each other and the teacher better, as Margie and Allison said, but at the same time I think teachers need to advocate not only for quality person to person communication, but for quality digital etiquette. Activities that relate personable communication with digital communication can help students understand the importance of positive communication, wether it be personable or digital. Alex made a good point that as teachers we need to be as professional as possible when communicating with parents digitally and this would reinforce to parents as well that they should be professional when communicating digitally and to teach their children to do the same. I think that introducing the nine themes of digital citizenship to students and parents would be a great way to introduce digital etiquette to students and parents. Role modeling appropriate digital behavior and etiquette is essential. Also, I think supervised blogging such as this is a wonderful way for parents and students to practice their digital etiquette.

  11. Q1. The element that is most important in digital citizenship is digital etiquette. This is most important because we need to teach students the proper way to use technology. When we use blogs, wikis, etc. in our classrooms we need to first teach children what the right and wrong ways to use such things. We need to tell them the behaviors we expect and that there would be consequences if items posted were inappropriate. As a teacher candidate, I think that it is our job to teach the digital etiquette to students. If we do not teach them the responsiblities of technology use they may not know what appropriate behaviors are.
I also agree with what Alex, in that teachers need to be professional at all times even when emailing. It is important for teachers to come across as very professional at all times.

  12. i agree with all of your blogs! As Alex said " I feel that as our society is becoming more and more apt to communicate via technology our person to person communication skills are weakening. This is why I think digital etiquette is so important for teachers and students to know. " Teachers are supposed to be responislbe citizens both on and off the internet. Before the internet became such an important part of teacher studnet relationships, teahers were only supposed to be role models in the classroom and on the streets. Now teahers also have to be role modles on the internet.

Really good post.. keep it up!

Margie im glad you liked the clip!

  13. Q2: Digital Etiquette is important for future teachers to teach their students. We must teach children ways in which we can use the internet and websites we want to, but ways in which we can use it respectfully. i agree with Alex that we need to be pay more attention to the ways we write our emails and newsletters. We can teach children to pay more attention to particular devices they use on the internet and how they can practice good etiquette at home. For example, children are now using fscebook and AIM which takes away from proper language and focuses more on slang and misspelling words. If you can teach the students to try to speak to thier friends and family the way they do in school and in proper settings when they are using facebook and AIM I feel that they will benefit in the end from trying not to use the slang as much. Even if we as teachers try to do this it will only help us in teh future when we tell our students to do this as well.

  14. Lauren, I really like how you gave an example of when students are not using digitial etiquette and really should be. I agree that students need to practice using proper etiquette becuase the more they get in the habit of using slang terms online the harder it will be for them to get out of the habit. Children will need to know how to use proper etiquette both when talking to individuals face-to-face, and when writing e-mails (which is becoming more and more common). Great job everyone! Keep up the great blogging!

Why else is digital etiquette so important, and how can we teach students in our classroom how to use personal etiquette?

  15. Lisa--I liked the video that you posted. I think that many people, adults and children, do not think that what they are putting on the internet can come back at any point. Once you put something out there you cannot take it back. I think this is something that we need to teach students at an early age so that they do not do something that could come back to haunt them.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I also agree with Lauren. Although using the internet can be very helpful, it does cause children to be more lax with their grammar. It is our job as future teacehers be an example for children. By using blogs with them and other online activities we can comunicate with our future students while still being professional. This will in turn keep them professional while being online.

Kristi im glad you liked the video! It is very important for studnets to understand how important it is to make good decisions esp. while on the internet!

Good job everyone keep up the good work!

  17. I believe Digital Literacy, which is the process of teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology is extremely important. Because technology is constantly evolving and changing there is always something new that needs to be learned. As future teachers, it is important that our knowledge of new technology is at least one step ahead of the students. I have seen many cases in which teachers do not bother to take the time and learn how to use new technologies that are available to them. This can prevent students from learning experiences that can truly benefit them. I have also seen cases in which students know more than the teacher and slack off because the teacher is teaching the students something they already know. It is very important for teachers to stay current with new technology in order to allow students the best learning experience possible.

  18. Chrissy-- great post! I totally agree with you. I have also seen cases where students are more technologically advanced than there teachers, resulting in loss of interest in lessons. You made a great point in saying that as future teachers, we always need to be one step ahead of our students when it comes to technology. Keep up the good work!

  19. Q3: I think digital communication is a great way to connect teachers and students. Students will be able to ask teachers questions online to find out answers to questions they have about their classwork, which is a great advancement to when students had to wait until the next day to find out answers to their questions. Also, I think it would be helpful if students from the class had a blog they could access to discuss homework problems together, and then the teacher could help if they are unable to find the answer on their own. I think that with the newer ways on communication, there should be no reason for students to say they didnt understand the assignment.

  20. chelsea- I liked the comment you made about students having a blog to communicate with one another. I remember while in school i really didn't have anyone to turn to with help on my homework except my parents, and they weren't very helpful! I think that the students having a blog for themselves is a great idea beacuse they can all work together to solve homework issues and it is a great way to contact the teacher when you aren't in class. I know that many teachers are busy when they leave school and as a student it is uncomfortable to call the teacher at their house at night. This would be a great way for the teacher to help the students and it wouldn't really take them away from what they were doing at home!! Awesome comment!!

  21. Chelsea and Erin- I also think using a blog to communicate, esp about homework, is very useful. I too never wanted to stay after school to ask for homework questions so i instead would wait until i got back to school the next day and THEN i would ask i friend. With a blog the students will be able to be in the comfort of their own house and still ask questions. This will then give them more time to work on the their homework and not copy off a friend. Great Idea!

  22. Q2- I believe digital etiquette is just as important as etiquette when you are talking to someone in person, if not more important. Over the internet, you are not able to see the facial or bodily expressions that people have. This can cause a phrase or sentence to be manipulated(not on purpose), by the person who is on the recieving end. This frequently can happen through things such as AIM or facebook, as I am sure we have all experienced. We need to make sure we are being just as polite, if not more polite, on internet-based sources as teachers.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Q3- One small way that digital communication can help between a teacher and students is a simple wiki website. At night or on weekends if students have a question, they are able to post it on the website. If teachers do not feel comfortable giving out a cell or home phone number to their students, this is a great way to keep in touch. If a teacher is not likely to check the website a few times a day, they could also give out their e-mail to the students and parents, as long as the teacher is willing to check the account several times a day(including the weekends) to be able to answer any questions that may arise.

  24. courtney- I completely agree with your comment on digital etiquette. It is very important to speak professionally when writing e-mails and communicating through the internet because the person receiving the message can't see facial expressions and really doesn't know if you are joking or not when you make a comment. Professor Orvil made a good comment when he sent an e-mail a while ago. He said to make sure to use spell check and speak properly when e-mailing fellow students and professors because when you make spelling errors it just looks bad on you as the writer!

  25. Lisa-I am on the same page as you. I never wanted to or was able to stay after school to ask questions about homework or make up the homework I had missed. Blogging is a great idea like Erin and Chelsea had said for the use of homework help. Since children today are so technologically advanced blogging will most likely come easy to them, therefore enabling them to help out their classmates with their homework.

  26. Chelsea, Lisa, and Britany- great points about using a blog to help students communicate outside of class for reasons like asking questions about homework. I feel that a class blog is not only a great way to help students figure out homework problems, but can give them a way to discuss and expand upon what was taught in class. This way on weekends or long breaks, they discuss different things taught in class and stay on top of the lessons being taught in school. Great responses everybody! You all seemed to really understand what the readings were about. Keep it up!

  27. Everyone has made really great points on the topic of digital etiquette. Courtney I agree with your points about digital etiquette being just as important as etiquette when you are talking to someone in person. I have encountered many times when I was unsure of someone's message because of their language online. That is something that can cause a real problem... Also the ideas many of you had on student blogs, I agree they would be very beneficial to students having difficulties with homework assignments or questions!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Courtney- I also agree with your points about digital ettiqutte. Especially being future teachers we want to make sure that we communicate with our future employers and even our teachers who can help us along the way to our careers in the proper way. We always want to make sure that the things we say dont come off as having an attitude or use abreviations like we would while chatting with our friends on an instant messenger, or a text message. Also the example that Erin gave about Orvil's email is completely true. We want to write professionally first to make it easier for the reader and second to be respectful.

  29. Q1. The elements that I found most important were, digital communication, digital health and wellness, and digital security. Digital communication is so important because you need to understand how to go about speaking on the internet, in a way its like communicating in person because you need to have respect but also you need to understand internet lingo. Digital health and wellness is important to because we all need to understand the risk's of being on the internet and just like making good choices in everyday activities we need to do the same while on the internet too. I believe its very important for our students to understand that. Lastly Digital security is important because we need to understand that the internet is a huge world where people can get a lot of access to your life and information about you. Digital security is things like keeping your age private and your birthday and even having a security blocker on your computer to protect your banking information.

  30. There were a total of nine elements that make up a digital citizen but i found a few of them to be more important than others.I think that the most important are digital access, communication and literacy. I find digital access important because you cannot assign a project at home that involves the use of technology such as internet or other types of technology if all of your students do not have access so you would need to find alternatives. Digital communication is also very important. If a class if using blogs or wikispaces or a class website they need to know when they need to visit it as well as how to get to it. That is where digital literacy comes into it. That is the most important element. Because using technology has become so common and important in the classroom the teacher needs to learn how to use technology in order to provide a variety of educational strategies. The teacher needs to learn how to affectively teach technology use to the children so they understand how to use it properly!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Chelsea, I completely agree with what you said about using technology for students and teachers to communicate. If there is a class website for the students to use they will have no excuses for not understanding work. Homework can be posted there so there are no misunderstandings about what to do. If they have a question about work, they don't have to wait until class to ask. With a class blog students might be able to get ideas and help each other out.

  32. Brittany, I agree with you that digital literacy is the most important element of being a digital citizen. Teachers need to be aware and up to date with the newest technology because students are digital natives and are growing up with technology all around them. Students want to have interesting and fun ways to use technology so teachers need to be able to provide students with that opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with Brittany and Sarah that digital literacy is the most important element of being a digital citizen. I like how Sarah pointed out that students are the digital natives which is so true and teachers really need to be updated with what the newest technology is to keep their students motivated and interested in the content.
