  1. Based on reading 9.1 I am intrigued to hear more about Open Educational Resources (OER). I am glad to hear that so many people are advocated for sharing information on the web. I am also a fan of getting new ideas online and like many of the ideas from the article. Out of the 10 reasons instructors and course designers use free online content, I like reason 4, pedagogical idea sharing. As a future teacher, I like the idea of being able to find creative lessons and practices from other professional teachers. I also like 9, personal growth. I think its really important to keep up with new and improved technology to be able to share that information with my students and staff. OER will help me to accomplish all these goals and more as a future teacher. I hope that in the coming years ahead, more people will become advocates for OER, which will all future teachers become more knowledgable in the classroom.

  2. Based on reading 9.2, I liked the google application called Lesson Plan Book Buddies. When I clicked on the link, the powerpoint was clear and easy to follow. Not only that, it looked like fun!! Students get to publish their own stories that they created from the help of digital art tools. I also liked how throughout the lesson plan, their is modifications made for younger and older students, so that this project can be for all grades. Literacy skills are indicated throughout the lesson as well which is great to have students work on. I also really liked how the powerpoint really goes into detail about publishing the book, which is the fun outcome of the lesson. I also liked the extra links at the end for the students to keep exploring online. This lesson is creative, fun and the best part FREE to use the sites that creative the book online!

  3. Question2. One google application that i thought would be useful as a teacher in the classroom is choosing your own adventure story. This program "allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users". This will allow students to make their own adventure stories, while working with others, and improving their literacy skills. Students usually do not like writting and when they do write they try to rush. However, by using this app to choose your own adventure story, the students will take their time and create a creative story with their peers. As a group the students can learn to do new things on the computer such as create hyperlinks. This would be an amzing tool in the classroom! This will allow me to have students work in a group and explore new tools that will help them improve their literacy skills

  4. Q2. From the 9.1 reading

From the reading I think that numbers 2 and 9 are strong reasons in supporting share online content. Number 2 is finding a learning passion or goal. This is extremely helpful because it allows someone to get more ideas and form different opinions about something that they may have never considered before. It’s hard to make a decision based on little to no facts but with this concept, you are able to look up information and develop a new insight. Number 9 (fewer learning restrictions) is very helpful as well. One has the freedom to take their time and develop their knowledge at their own pace. Everyone runs on different schedules and trying to squeeze something else in is often very difficult, but with online learning you are no longer confined to a specific time and place. As long as you can discipline yourself, you can learn anywhere at any time. I would incorporate these into my classroom because they offer the students a quicker and sometimes more access to information than books at a library, it can be more convenient for them, and because students these days are technologically advanced and any time education and technology can be used in the classroom or for school work, is a great connection to their life and learning process. For example reason two could be used when trying to find a research topic and what interests them, and reason nine could be used for taking weekly quizzes and submitting homework.

  5. Amanda- I also like the book buddies and I agree with you it was very clear and easy to follow.

Lisa- I agree with you. Adventure stories would be a awesome way to get students engaged in reading adn writing. It is a creative way to get students engaged!

Jen-I agree with you! 2 and 9 are strong and giev good opportunities to teachers to expand and grow in what they already know.

  6. Q2. From reading 9.1, I think that #5 Professional Development is a strong reason to encourage shared online content and OER's, specifically for teachers. I think it is so important for teachers to stay updated on the latest developments in education, and using shared online content is a great way to do this. Many teachers are required to attend professional development conferences or workshops, but if the same material is available online, this could save teachers and schools time and money. I know as a future teacher I would much rather learn from an online source, than take a day off to attend a workshop on professional development. This kind of goes along with point #9, fewer learning restrictions. Learning takes place on the individuals time and schedule, which would be beneficial to teachers and their busy schedules.

  7. For Q2, based on reading 9.1 I would have to say #7- Generating a Learning Path. Having open resources could help the students who are struggling to understand a specific content area. I was thinking back to chem./physics class, the professor who taught lecture confused me, but my lab teacher would be able to explain it so I could understand. It was the same exact information just a different style of presentation. It made a huge difference to me to have another resource of accurate information. I would like to think that we could use open resources as part of our bag of tricks in the classroom to make sure all of our students understood the information.

  8. I agree with Jessica, using an online open resource for professional development would be a wise decision considering all of the budget crunches.

  9. I agree Margie and Jessica. Having the online sources readily available at home and not having to go out somewhere to attend some kind of workshop or presentation is a lot easier. Not only for people's crazy schedules, but also for money issues. Budgets everywhere are not passing and to save money for little things like this will help.

  10. I also looked at article 9.1 and i agree with Amanda in really liking reason 4 about sharing pedagogical ideas! It is really helpful to be able to see lesson plans from other teachers, sometimes they are more experianced teachers than us as begining teachers. We can use those to help us in creating a lesson plan and using some of their creative ideas! I dont really see it as a tool where you can completely cut out your own lesson planning but just as a great resource. I feel that it is really good resource for that but also on the other side of the teachers posting the lesson plans it is a way to show off a lesson that worked really great! If a teacher feels that a lesson worked really well they can easily share it with so many other teachers easily.

  11. Jessica- I agree, teachers need to be updated on the latest developments in education, this is the best way for the students to learn to their fullest potential.

Margie- I love how you used a personal example to show which is the strongest reason, it is good to have different presentation styles so everyone can learn.

Meaghan- I agree having lesson plans as a resource would be a great help. It is nice to have something to look at and can give some really good ideas!

  12. Brittany- You makes a very good point. With the way the economy is today not having to spend more money on conferences would be nice. It would be cool to have these type of conferences be done through something like Skype.

  13. 9.2. One of the google applications that i thought would be very useful in the classroom was the calendars google app. This is an important tool to use as a future because it is a way to organize and make sure that all of the faculty/staff and parents/caregivers are on the same page. Also it is helpful to know when the important dates are coming up so that everyone will be able to attend these events. Also this is good because it is a way for parents at home to be able to arrange their schedules ahead of time so that they will be able to make these events or know when their child needs to be somewhere. Digital calendars made online are an important resource for us as future teachers to use.

  14. Q2: The strongest reason why learners might use share online content is extending the class time. This is essential because you can accomplish much more if students watch or read things that you post before the following class. There will be more time to discuss and elaborate on topics if students have already been prepared before class.
Sarah-I agree that the use of digital calendars are helpful and important for parents to keep up with what is happening in their child's classroom.

  15. Sarah- I like the idea of a calendar app. too, especially with most parent having the internet on their phone, they are able to access the calendar at any time.

Kristi- I agree with you about online content being online for the students to explore it before class. This way the students would also be able to find things that the teacher may not have highlighted in class.

  16. 9.1 I agree with J3NNYGR4Y that individuals use online content to find a learning passion or goal. I think this is one of the main reasons individuals use the internet because once anyone finds something that may be interesting to them, they can continue learning about that hobbie/subject to learn all the information they possibly can online. Also, I think this reason is so strong because individuals of all ages are always looking to find more ways to pursue something they are passionate about. I also beileve that individuals first find something they love and are interested in and then use that to build on the other nine reasons.

  17. Q3- I agree with Lisa about the Choose your own adventure story app. This seems like something that could be very fun in a classroom. It would make the students use their mind and creativity to take their time and create a story with a group of their peers. This would also help students with their interaction skills, because they would get a chance to work in groups. All students need to be able to work with others in a group setting and this could be a fun way to help enhance their social skills.

  18. Margie....I deff agree that having the resources at home is great and very helpful especailly for kids that cant get to the library or something to work on a school project. Being able to work from home is very helpful.

  19. Q2- I like number 9. Using the internet as a resource there is really no limitations to the things that you can accomplish. Just to use as an example-say you are doing a research project. If the internet is off limitations, you are seriously limited to the things you can use. Most all of the books and articles you would be able to use would be in the library. They could take a long time just to find all of the materials you need and then you are limited to the hours that the library is open. If you are able to use the internet, a quick google search could come up with ten great websites for you to do research on in a very short time. You are also free to do this on your own time wherever you are able to access the internet, instead of being restricted to whenever those library hours happen to be.

  20. Q2. In reading 9.1 I found that the idea of professional development is a strong arguement for having online resources and OER's. These resources are a great way for teachers to gather ideas and learn new techniques. As many of you have already said, not having these resources will make it difficult to get help and find ideas.

  21. Q3. I really liked Building Sandcastles with Google Documents. This application allows for a lot of different activities. It gave examples such as creating quizzes, keeping track of grades and attendance, but also promoting group collaboration. It's nice because not only can this application be used for teachers but it can be used with students and staff as well. They give examples such as "Staff-to-staff: Sharing lesson plans
    Student-to-staff: Sharing writing and poetry
Student-to-student: Teamwork on essays ". They also give examples at the end of different things you can do with spreadsheets such as wordsearches and flashcards. I think it's a really neat application that is extremely versatile and can be used for a lot of different things.

  22. Q2. I think "Fewer learning restrictions" is a very strong reason why potential learners might use shared online content. People can learn when they want and how they want. With hectic schedules some people may not have the time to sit in a classroom. The internet has become so advanced and accommodating that it can sufficiently educate students. Just think of how many times you google search something. I think an example of this could be exactly what we are doing in class with blogs. We do not have to blog at a certain time and it is not a test. We can say how we feel and voice our opinions when we want and have time to explore what we want to say. Everyone learns from one anothers opinions even though we are not sitting in a classroom.

  23. Jessica-I really liked what you said about the teacher workshops. I agree that it is so important to keep teachers up to date. New and efficient ways to teach are always being discovered and it is very important to keep teachers learning. Giving teachers the day off to go to a workshop takes away students time to learn. I really liked the point you made about giving teachers online sources to learn from. Teachers should always be learning not only from their students but from other teachers and workshops.

  24. Q 2. In 10 Reasons Potential Learners Might Use Shared Online Content I thought number 9 fewer learning restrictions was one of the strongest reasons. The internet and online content is available 24-7 and it allows everyone the opportunity to use it whenever they have free time and the ability. This is really important for people who have to juggle between school and work. I would use this in my classroom like my host teacher does now. He has his students go online to this website that has review test questions and games that they can do in their free time whenever they want and compete against other students.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Q2 - Based on the reading under the Top 10 Reasons Potential Learners Might Use Share Content i think the reason that is the strongest is having fewer learning restrictions. A teacher might do this because the internet offers endless amounts of resources and interactive ways of finding information like youtube videos, power points or interactive games. This could be used in the classroom during certain blocks of time like english to take online quizzes or for social studies to find different videos or photos on certain time periods. The teacher could also incorporate this in their classroom by assigning weekly homework assignements that are due at the end of the week so the students can comfortably and on their own time throughout the week work on sometihng using the internet ot find movies or photos, etc.
